Ditch the Overthinking: Tune into Your Heart and Trade Chaos for Life in the Slow Lane

“To see without eyes. To walk without feet. And to fly without wings. This is my prayer for you.”
~ Lyrics from “Call to Prayer” ~ Estes Tonne

What happens when we question the living experience of our senses to give us accurate information?

Our brains are these little computers that have been given a huge amount of responsibility and status when it comes to our experience as living entities.

We tout the virtues of “mind over matter.” Societal conditioning praises the so-called “logical mind” overruling the seemingly weaker or inferior (or let’s face it) “emotional” or feminine heart.

We talk about “getting my head on straight” and “thinking clearly” when it comes to decision making or problem solving.

And we completely and utterly obliterate the other senses and experiences that don’t scream as loud at us to override the brain. We discount our heart as frivolous; we ignore our intuition; we bypass the aches, pains, and injuries of our physical bodies.

And we wonder when we wind up frazzled and scattered; disembodied to the point of not even noticing when we push our bodies beyond reasonable abilities; bad tempered and resentful toward everyone in our life; overwhelmed past the point of exhaustion; and just plain old SAD.

Let’s normalize taking three breaths before we make any decisions. Let’s praise women who can follow their heart over their head. Let’s have more JOMO (“joy of missing out” versus “fear of missing out”). Let’s stop to smell all the roses. Let’s strive for life in the slow lane.

Why is all this important? Because we are human BEings not DOers. We are meant to feel and experience and celebrate this life we have been given. We aren’t meant to be robots moving through the world on autopilot. We have so much more to offer the world through our presence, our connection, our ability to live life through our purpose.

So next time you feel numb or stressed or like you don’t have time for YOU….stop what you’re doing. Take three slow breaths with your eyes closed. Imagine your little 8 year old self and what she would tell you if she could see you now.

And then go live life a little more in the slow lane.
